[BrightTalk Episode 4] The secrets of size and how it affects biology
To us, air is practically invisible but through the lens of an ant, it feels like walking through a thick forest of invisible honey. Mayflies, the smallest flying insects, have special wings that almost look like arms, allowing them to grab onto the air rather than simply flap. Some creatures, like water striders, use surface tension to walk on water. Small organisms can also be incredibly strong, for example, a rhinoceros beetle can lift objects up to 850 times its own body weight.
These fascinating facts about the secrets of size were shared in a captivating talk by our pupil, Annie. Watch the video to discover how size pushes organisms to adapt, innovate, and find ingenious solutions to the challenges of scale.
