Our Mission and Philosophy

Life at the Senior School

Our supportive community ensures that pupils flourish in their chosen academic subjects, take advantage of the many opportunities on offer and are supported every step of the way.

A Culture of Kindness

We know that young people who are happy are young people who thrive and we believe the best way of achieving a happy and content community is to instil a culture of kindness, ensuring that everyone feels valued for who they truly are.

A Part of Society

Our pupils know that there is a whole world beyond the classroom and we encourage them to remember that they are a part of society, not apart from it.

A Reputation for Innovation

Founded in 1845 by William Aldwin Soames, Brighton College was the first independent school to be founded in the UK county of Sussex. The school has a long history of being innovative and occupies a significant place in the development of British education.

During the 19th century the College helped promote the use of individual classrooms for teaching small groups; was an early pioneer in teaching both modern languages and science, and later built the first purpose-built science laboratory; invented the school magazine; and set up the first gymnasium.

From these foundations a reputation was established for entrepreneurial thinking and for questioning traditional teaching methods. In 1973, the school became co-educational.

Throughout its history Brighton College UK has always been keen to question what has been considered ‘the norm’. This spirit continues to the present day throughout the Brighton College family of schools, embracing individuality in a respectful community, and remaining committed to the transformative powers of education.
